...oga you no dey rest, contactors out of inquisitiveness asked the Commissioner
The Honourable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Abanika Taiye, surprised contractors with an unscheduled visit to construction sites at Kogi State University, Kabba, and the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, on Thursday, December 26, 2024. The inspection aimed to ensure compliance with the state government’s standards and contractual agreements, underscoring the administration's commitment to quality infrastructural development.
During his visit to Kogi State University, Kabba, Hon. Abanika Taiye assessed the ongoing construction of the Senate Building, Faculty of Science, and 350-capacity hostels for male and female students. These projects were observed at the foundation trench excavation stage, with preparations underway for foundation foot casting. Contractors surprised by the Commissioner’s visit on a public holiday, exclaimed, “Oga, you no dey rest? You are supposed to be resting today, being a holiday and time for festivities.”
In response, the Commissioner said, “My ministry has no resting day. His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has given a marching order that all projects in Kogi State must meet standard specifications. My office is where the construction sites are, and I am here to ensure that public funds are utilized judiciously.”
He further cautioned contractors against cutting corners, emphasizing that regular monitoring would continue. Hon. Abanika instructed contractors to involve the ministry at every stage of the construction process to guarantee quality work. While commending some contractors for their speed and excellence, he urged others lagging behind to step up, stressing that the government would not entertain excuses for delays.
Additionally, Hon. Abanika appealed to the management of Kogi State University, through its Chief Security Officer, to provide maximum security for contractors, ensuring the safety of both personnel and equipment.
At CUSTECH, Osara, the Commissioner inspected the nearly completed 350-capacity male and female hostels. Expressing satisfaction with the progress, he urged contractors to maintain their momentum and ensure timely delivery.
Hon. Abanika also commended some contractors who were present at the various sites, diligently working to meet established project schedules.
He reiterated the commitment of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration to massive infrastructural development across the state. The Commissioner highlighted his ministry’s responsibility to ensure that these projects are properly implemented for the benefit of Kogi residents. “This is why I abandoned my holiday to visit these sites,” he said, vowing to continue monitoring projects across the state and holding contractors accountable for any lapses.
