The second term of Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration approaches its last quarter, one thing the people of Kogi State would attest to without mincing words is the fact that he is never a lethargic leader. Right from the beginning of his first term in January 2016, he committed himself to the transformation of the State by reforming its machineries of government (Civil Service), its security architecture, Health, Education, Transportation, Commerce, Culture and Tourism, Agriculture, Human Capital Development, and ensuring ethnic cohesion and development at all levels.
In the area of healthcare development for instance, Kogi State under the leadership of Governor Yahaya Bello has made tremendous progress as follows;
Part 1 On Healthcare Delivery
1. The launched of the “Bello healthcare Plus” initiative; a healthcare delivery package which includes free distribution of delivery kits, postpartum haemorrhage packs, hypertensive packs, episiotomy packs and free maternal/ new born health care services, amongst others to pregnant women from the poor socio-economic background.
2. To curtail the outbreak of Lassa fever in 2017, the state government established a multi-billion naira bio-safety laboratory at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja and procured safety kits for all health workers exposed to the disease. With the establishment of the bio-safety laboratory in Lokoja and additional investment in critical areas such as laboratory reagents and testing kits, motivation of staff, intensifying community sensitization, provision of treatment centres and supplies and training of health workers, the state has been able to mitigate the risk of multiple disease outbreak threats that include COVID-19, cholera, Lassa Fever, Yellow Fever, Cerebral spinal Meningitis, vaccine-derived poliovirus, among others.
3. In the area of Health Projects/ Infrastructures, New Direction Administration in the State embarked on massive health infrastructural development which includes the establishment of The Reference Hospital, Okene with the state of the art medical equipment of global standard, the clinical complex of Prince Abubakar Audu Teaching Hospital, Anyigba, expansion and renovation of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, establishment of Ultra- Modern General Hospital Gegu-Beki, Ultra-Modern General Hospital Badoko, Ultra-Modern General Hospital Isanlu, Renovation Remodeling and Upgrade of Zonal Hospital Idah amongst others.
4. Medical Equipment; Relevant medical equipment comprising of basic and advanced cutting-edge medical instrument and machines along with BLS and ALS Ambulances have been procured, and distributed and all equipment installed at various hospitals in the state.
5. In boosting Human Resources for Health Sector development, the state’s training institutions have also received tremendous support from the government.The College of Nursing and Midwifery, Obangede, which was a monotechnic, has been converted to a Polytechnic, with the introduction of new courses such as Dental Nursing and Midwifery. Today, all courses in the State Health Training Institutions (College of Nursing & Midwifery Obagede and College of Health Sciences and Technology Idah) are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education. This enables the graduation of qualified and competent health manpower for improved health services in the state.
