Speaker, Kogi State Youth Parliament, Rt Hon Ibikunle Olajide led a Delegation of Parliamentarians on a brief meeting with CP Akeem A. Yusuf, Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command.
In a press release made public by the Chief Press Secretary of the Speaker, Ojuolape Isaac, Rt Hon. Ibikunle Olajide hailed the Commissioner of Police and the Nigeria Police Force over the protection of lives and properties of Kogi State citizens.
Part of his statements reads;
"Our useful and youthful Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Gov. Yahaya Bello is doing a great job in the aspect of security. Gov. Yahaya Bello is an award winning Governor on Security. Today Kogi State is safe and insecurity has been reduced to the bearest minimum. This has in no small way boost our economy. We can now carry out our duties and responsibilities without fear of being attacked or kidnapped".
Rt Hon Ibikunle Olajide also stressed the unlawful acts of some police officer who harass youths and call them all sorts of names like "Yahoo-Yahoo".
The Speaker said Governor Yahaya Bello has changed the narratives.
"Kogi youths under Governor Yahaya Bello are responsible, reliable and committed to the development of our state".
He said invading into people's privacy like checking their phones and banks account balance is wrong.
The Speaker also charged the Commissioner of Police to educate the police officers on the use of their firearm. He said the possession of firearms by some elements in the society should not be condoned in the state.
Also speaking, the Desk Officer of Kogi State Youth Parliament, Mr Bashir Umar appeal for harmonious relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the Kogi State Youth Parliament ahead of the November Governorship Election in the state.
The Desk Officer said Kogi State Youth Parliament will be hosting a Sensitization program on Electoral Violence and the role of Youths in the coming election and will be happy if the Nigeria Police Force can partner with the State Youth Parliament to make the program a memorable one.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Akeem A. Yusuf in his response appreciated the Parliamentarians for the visits and expressed optimism, noting that, a working relationship has been established between the Police and Kogi Youths.
CP Akeem A. Yusuf said that before anybody is searched, there should be a warrant to that effect and the youths of the state should know this.
He said, no police officer have the right to search anybody's phone or request for account details unless their is a warrant to that effect so at any point, one should request for "search warrant" before allowing any police officer to invade in their privacy or such person should asked to be taken to the nearest police station if he/she is clean and sure of their act.
The Commissioner of Police further stated their commitment to the discharge of their duties, protection of lives and properties and cubbing criminal acts in the state.
His Excellency, The Executive Governor of Kogi State is not just ensuring the protection of lives and properties of the citizens of Kogi State but he is also availing the Nigeria Police Force all security apparatus to ease their job, says Commissioner of Police.
The Commissioner of Police assured the Youth Parliament that in his next meeting with the DPO's of various Divisions, he will streessed the need for divisions to remain lawful in the discharge of their duties as any police officer caught in an unlawful act or violating the Nigeria Police Force, Code of Conduct will be penalised and will face the consequences before the law.
The Commissioner of Police advised youths to stay away from electoral violence and be law abiding citizen as the Nigeria Police Force will carry out their duties and will not spare anybody who breech the law.
"I am happy the youth Parliamentarians are contributing their own quota to ensure Kogi State remain peaceful and the Nigeria Police Force will be ready to partner with the Kogi State Youth Parliament in its upcoming programs", says CP Akeem A. Yusuf, Commissioner of Police".
